Ability to change variable type of an existing variable

Currently, you can only set the variable type when creating a variable. Thereafter, the type cannot be changed. If a customer wants to change the type of a variable, they will have to delete the existing variable and create another one. If the old variable had been used in the workflow, the customer will have to manually remove every instance of the old variable and replace it with the new variable.

    Hi @Guest ,

    Thanks for your idea submission!

We did explore the idea of allowing the ability to change the variable type. We quickly encountered issues where data types might not match, or are invalid in the field that the original variable is being used in.

As a result, the Remove/Replace variable feature was the chosen solution - you can replace variables of a similar type, or you can remove all references of the variable.

You can also quickly identify and navigate to where each variable reference is used - https://help.nintex.com/en-US/nwc/Content/Designer/UseVariablesinWorkflow.htm#View. If you are indeed trying to changing the data type, this will help to speed up the process and ensure all references are found and managed.

Let me know if you have any further questions!

    Regards,
