Improve the Insert Variable search panel usability

Whenever I have to use the Insert Variable panel I'm always set off by 2 little things that could easily be changed and could improve the overall experience.

First and most important is the ability to search with partial match or even using wildcards.

Unless I'm missing something, when you start typing something in the search it will give you matches but only ones that starts with the searched term. This makes the search difficult to use when you have lots of variables to choose from. I've tried to test wildcards to see if they were supported but it appears that's not the case.

Secondly, I like using the ctrl+home combination to select all text (usually to delete it), and for some reason the search text box doesn't allow that, it seems like the home button is simply disabled in that field and I'm not sure I see a reason for this.
